Scores of bestselling and critically-acclaimed crime writers will perform readings of their work at “Noir at the Bar: Chilled to the Marrow,” a series of literary events in nine different cities around the globe in an effort to show support and raise funds for #TeamEvie, as Evie Swierczynski and her family—including her dad, crime writer Duane Swierczynski—rally to beat Evie’s recently diagnosed Acute Myeloid Leukemia. A Gofundme page was established by a friend in the face of the expenses and lost income as Evie’s parents have focused on Evie’s recovery.
Events will take place in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, New York, Washington, D.C., St. Louis, Baltimore, Asbury Park, Austin and London, featuring some of the biggest names in crime fiction, including Megan Abbott, Lawrence Block, Alison Gaylin, and Bill Lashner (full list below).
“The crime fiction community is a tight-knit and loyal family of writers, readers and friends. When we learned what Duane, Meredith and their family were going through, our first response was ‘How can we help?’,” said Alex Segura, a New York-based crime writer who will be hosting one of the Noir at the Bar events and helped coordinate the initiative. “By creating this worldwide event, geared toward raising awareness and money for the family, we hope we can help people who’ve been such amazing friends to us over the years during this very difficult time.”
“We wanted to help and to show we cared. This seemed the most natural way to do both,” said Philadelphia-based writer Jon McGoran, who helped spearhead the event. “As soon as we put the idea out there, It was truly amazing how many people want to be a part of it.”
“To every person following our story. To every person loving us through this… thank you,” said Meredith Swierczynski, Evie’s mom. “Every day Evie seems to face a new challenge, and she always faces it with her usual bravery. We are ready to bring her home… but until we do, until we post the last update, the one where we say she’s in remission and the cancer is gone…. thank you for continuing to send kind words, words of encouragement and love.”

The very first Noir at the Bar featured none other than Duane Swierzcynski.
